A Winter Park native, Patrice Shirer started in business in her early 20’s, inspired by her grandmother who was an interior designer and remodeling homes before HGTV came along. Patrice started her own renovation and remodeling business in 1980, buying homes in the Winter Park - Orlando areas and updating them for resell. In the process she gained positive write-ups in newspapers and trade magazines. From there, she got a real-estate broker license in 1984, and after several years working in real estate in sales and the development side, she acquired her contractor license. As the market changed so did her business, once people began to favor new
construction over home remodeling. Under the name Hobby Homes Inc., she built over 30 homes from the late ‘80s until 2025.
During that time, she served 14 years on the Board of Adjustments & Appeals for the city of Winter Park as a member and chairperson. Her keen knowledge of real estate and construction made he uniquely qualified for these roles. Knowing how this process works—and what appointed official are looking for in variance requests—is why she launched RuleBreakers.
